College is full of beer, parties and cheap microwave dinners and although that may sound bad, let’s be honest…. It’s awesome and we all know it.
College is some of the most fun most people will experience in their lives, which is why when my summer clients leave to go back to college I’m not expecting them to have great nutrition and train daily like we do here at home.
But spending a few years over at college can cause some serious gut damage, not only in appearance but also internally.
One thing I can tell you about post-college weight gain is that I am the guy to come to when you want to get rid of it. For one I train and provide diets for a wide variety of people, but I specifically help out many friends and clients in this situation simply because I am at that same age. I’ve been there, gained it, lost it and now live an extremely healthy lifestyle!
I have clients who are currently in local colleges, clients who come to me during the summers, clients online currently in school, and also all my good friends that utilize me to help them avoid packing on their “party-pouch”. [AKA belly… I know, clever!]
So how do you get rid of the college weight? A lot simpler than you are probably making it out to be.
Eat similar to a cave man and train full body lifts, period.
Most people I know who are in college or are fresh out of college do one of two things:
1.) They get a program online that is a bodybuilding split. They have leg days, chest days, etc.…
- This is wrong for a simple reason, YOU’RE NOT A BODYBUILDER! Until you are extremely lean, you don’t really have any business having a “chest” day. You need to perform workouts that work on creating a lean body with a low body fat percentage. So instead of doing a leg press, do some front squats and chin-ups. Too advanced? Ok, do a goblet squat and inverted rows instead.2.) They’re on what I call “The TV Commercial Diet”.
- This means your eating Special-K, Fiber one and all the “Healthy” crap you see on TV that is still processed and full of carbs you haven’t even earned in the gym yet. So now what? Go minimalist and eat like a caveman! Take out anything in a box or can and go back to the basics, meat and veggies. Add some clean starches (potatoes/rice) in your post workout meal and your set.
Now you’re looking for the solution, well I have that for you. First off lets attack the dietary problem.
At this stage of your fitness and health you do not need to jump on a crazy meal plan based diet for a couple of reasons. One being that it is too strict and will be very hard to stick to after leaving college, A.K.A. party-land. The second being that it is not needed unless you have extreme fitness goals or a very specific look you are trying to achieve.
So for you post college grads, I suggest The Handful Diet. This is a diet plan that I personally wrote that eliminates calorie counting, nutrient tracking and any other stresses involved with being on a specific meal plan.
For training I suggest getting on a program targeted towards full body workouts that hit every movement pattern our bodies are built to make. In other words, stop training muscle groups and start training movements.
Make sure your workout hits a hip hinge (deadlift), knee hinge (squat), push (presses), pulls (rows/chins), and core (anti-extension/rotation). A good thing to add into the mix would also be single leg movement, which could be anything from a single leg deadlift or lunge to a sled pull. Do all that and you’ve hit every muscle you have and then some!
