Human Optimization is a word that’s thrown around a lot today. Some say it’s being completely organic, some just think it’s being lean, and some believe if you fast and drink coffee with butter than you’re the king of optimization…
What do you think it is? Seriously, let me know by commenting at the bottom of this article! Today, I’m going to tell you what I think it means… In fact, I’m going to explain how I optimized my body to help me shed 45-50lbs of fat, build slabs of muscle, increase productive, boost my hormones, and more than triple my income…
First, I have a simple question to ask you; “If you could be a Ferrari or the world’s shittiest car, which would you pick?”
I know what you’re thinking… “It’s obvious what I would pick… THE FERRARI MOFO!”
That’s clear, we’d all pick the damn Ferrari! But today you’re not picking which to own or drive… You ARE the car.
So why is that the question today? Why am I using the oldest and most cheesy personal trainer icebreaker in the book – you know, the old “Are you using premium or unleaded fuel for your body today?” (With a cheesy grin and extra tight gym polo on)…
I’m asking because I want you to think a bit deeper this time.
See I’d have you consider that even though you’re reading this saying you’d absolutely pick the Ferrari… You’re not showing that in your daily actions.
If you owned a Ferrari, which you paid anywhere between $200-400k, you would be putting premium fuel in that car.
You’d be changing the oil and rotating the tires before it was needed.
You’d have it detailed every other day.
It’d be garaged up every night.
You’d have a framed photo of it on your wall for your friends to see.
And you’d probably even have a nickname for the damn thing.
You’d treat it like a fucking king.
The Ferrari would be living a very optimized life. A life to last.
So….
Do you fuel your body with premium fuel?
Are you doing the mobility and recovery needed to keep yourself moving well?
Are you tracking your nutrition, training and progress?
Are you giving your body the sleep it needs?
Would you frame a photo of it or even take a selfie at the beach?
Are you treating yourself like fucking royalty?
Are you living an optimized life? A life to last?
I’d say probably not, for most… Shit, I know wasn’t.
I had a realization with this exact same concept when someone put it to me this way. In fact, to be honest, it was a ‘douchey’ trainer at a big box gym about 7 years.
See I was tired and fed up with being overweight, feeling lethargic and un-athletic, and moving around like a sloth every day of my life.
When I finally built up the courage to go to the local gym, the guys first pick up line to get me on his training roster was, “Do you want to treat your body like a Ferrari or a Ford Pinto, bro?”
I laughed, said I’m good, and walked off to do my own horribly planned workout, which was pulled straight out of bodybuilding magazine I purchased at Wal-Mart.
But later got to thinking… Of how I would actually treat a Ferrari if I had one.
And for where I was in life at the time, that was 3 moons away from ever being possible. It was a distant dream… shit I don’t think I had ever even seen a Ferrari in person before, only in movies.
So I would treat it more than well… I would sleep in it, eat breakfast lunch and dinner in it… I’d probably just fucking live in it.
So why not my body? My body is worth more than some piece of Italian metal.
My body deserves food that will make me feel good, be more productive, and have some real energy. Potato chips, burgers and beer won’t ever do that for me.
See I got to thinking about this again the other day, because I ate something that was highly processed and afterwards my stomach was talking to me – as in making weird ass noises while I laid on the couch watching Bates Motel.
To be completely transparent with you, I am all for flexible dieting. I think it is the smartest way to be realistic and consistent with a long-term nutrition plan, regardless of your goals. So in other words, I believe you should have a little bit of whatever in your diet at times.
But my thought process behind this is that it really should be at the bare minimum. It should be on a birthday, holiday, anniversary, or very special occasion. It should be when you don’t really have control; therefore you should just be present and enjoy it.
But at every moment we have the opportunity to fuel our body in order to thrive and feel as we’re actually optimizing our time here on earth, we absolutely should.
So… Look at your daily life.
Could your nutrition be better?
Could you move more often?
Could you maybe lift some heavy shift more often?
Could you sleep better?
Could you try to manage stress more?
And if you truly put some effort into all that…
Who would you be?
How much more would you get done?
How much more could you accomplish?
How much more confidence and energy would you have?
I’ll be 100% real with you. Fixing this part of my life changed it completely.
I wouldn’t have the money, experience, confidence, strength, happiness, low-stress lifestyle, or beautiful girlfriend I have today… If I didn’t start truly fueling my body like the Ferrari that it is (I’m more of a Bentley guy, but you get the point).
I was going to write an article about the exact nutrients and eating strategies I’ve implemented into my life to lose layers of body fat, build slabs of muscle, triple my productive AND my income, began to sleep like a baby, double my sex-drive, have the energy of a collegiate athlete, enhance my daily mood and positivity, and essentially just optimize the way I live my life – bringing you the science behind it all because I’m a geek who truly is passionate about this shit (as you can see)…
But I thought again… You don’t need the science; you need a reality check.
And then maybe some quick bullets to help you change some major points of your diet in order to finally optimize your way of life.
So that’s what I’m doing here. I gave you the reality check. Now I’ll give you the bullets you NEED to change if you want to feel like the machine you truly want to be.
First I’m going to let you guy’s know about my E-Book – “Eat Like A Man, Look Like An Athlete”. This book lays out EXACLY how to eat, what to eat, when to eat, and how you can completely transform your body through nutrition. And it’s on sale now (limited) for my readers only, for $27 – Click Here to Download Your Copy Today.
Now, to finish this article off… here are some bullet points that will break down a little bit more on things to implement, how you should be eating, and how you should be treating your body:
– 90% Of Your Diet Should Be Whole Foods, 100% Of The Time.
90% is truly the needed amount if you want to optimize your body and life. But if you practice or try to be 100% on point, 100% of the time – you’ll break. If you try to be 100% on point 90% of the time you’ll break! You need flexibility, that’s why I structure my coaching programs to be “90% optimal, 100% of the time”.
See there are reasons why food was created naturally on this earth, seems obvious… but it’s apparently not. In order to thrive and experience all the nutrients our body’s truly need, we need to get an abundance of these foods – way more of these than the man created foods (aka processed).
– Lose Body Fat and Build Muscle.
No matter what, if you work to have less body fat on your body and more muscle mass – your quality of life will be better, from every single aspect. Every hormonal process and system in your body functions better, your brain works better, your confidence and mood is higher, and you end up experience a life that is more significant.
This does not mean you need to be shredded. This means striving to be leaner, have more muscle and being healthier in general.
– Get More Omega-3’s and Less Omega 6’s.
Fatty fish, walnuts, egg yolks, hemp seeds, grass fed butter, etc…. The key here is simple – Omega-3’s are POWERFUL nutrient dense fats that give us so many benefits, it’s insane. But the typical American diet is seriously lacking them, while over consuming Omega-6’s because of bread and wheat products.
So whether you supplement them or get them from food, increase your Omega-3’s ASAP. My go-to brand for Omega-3 products is Onnit. Click Here to check them out.
– Dietary Variety
Every time you go grocery shopping, something new should be in your cart. Whether it’s the color of pepper, type of greens, or choice of meat/fish for the week. The more variety you get, the more nutrients you’ll intake and the more diverse your gut bacteria will be. This directly links to disease prevention, brain health/function, and even fat loss.
– Take Some Supplements
Yes… I said it, “Take supplements”… Coming from a guy who is really, really, not into supplements – you know I’m not bullshittin’ you here.
There are some products that when taken can truly help your health, mood, energy levels, gut health, and in turn of it all – make you feel better and lose body fat quicker.
1.) Curcumin/Turmeric – this one fights inflammation, auto-immune disease, can literally improve intelligence, and so much more… It’s a must. Take it with black pepper as it’s needed to be absorbed properly, otherwise it’s damn near useless. More info on Examine.com HERE.
2.) Fish, Krill or Algae Oil – I already broke this one down, OMEGA’S. Get them in. Get them HERE.
3.) Greens – You probably just don’t get enough greens, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, etc… So this is to keep your bases covered. Many times this will take care of the need for a multi-vitamin, but you can also take one of those. I don’t go a day without this greens supplement – Get the top-notch brand, HERE.
4.) Probiotic – I’d recommend cycling this off and on to just about anyone. It’s going to ensure your gut is in tiptop shape and that is crucial for life. My favorite brand, HERE.
– Start Training, More
When you exercise, you’re priming your body for a better life. It releases hormones that not only help you build muscle, increase libido, improve mood, and so much more… but it fights off disease, depression, aging, and cognitive decline as well.
If you’re not training or just not taking it seriously, yet you desire a more optimal life, career, or relationship, this is step 1. Click Here to get started today.
– TAKE ACTION.
Don’t wait. Just don’t.
Why would you? You want these results now, right? You don’t want to continue living lethargic or sub-optimally, right?
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”
We’ve all hear that saying before, but it never gets old because it’s so true. Nothing happens without action, that’s why every great quote or saying revolves around the same damn concept.
“Talk is cheap”
“Actions speak louder than words”
“The distance between dreams and reality is called action”
“Action always beats intention”
Should I keep going? Because I can! There’s a hundred in my head and I’m sure Google has 1,000,000 more for me to use…
My point is that this is simple; may not be easy, but it is simple and the biggest thing stopping you from taking the action, starting the journey and accomplishing your goals…
Is fear of failure and judgment.
You likely are lacking accountability and/or the last time you tried, it didn’t end up very well. But I’d have you consider that with real accountability, you’d be able to stay the course longer and finally reach your goals.
Everything is a choice. Whether that is to ignore it all or take action to change, it’s a choice we have to make ourselves.
